Kaun Banega Crorepati?

Friday, January 26th, 2007

The new KBC is out, with Shah Rukh Khan hosting the show. The very first show of this season, telecast on Monday, the 22nd of January, had the audience in splits as SRK kept cracking jokes. One interesting feature is the way SRK keeps joking with the contestant, something which I never noticed when Amitabh Bachchan was the host. This show looks like it’s going to break all records…

That Four Letter Word

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

That Four Letter Word (yeah, that’s the name of the movie!), written and directed by Sudhish Kamath, is a new style of film. The story, yeah, pretty much the same old one… boy meets girl, falls in love, fear of losing her if he proposes, blah blah blah… but the way TFLW takes you through the story is completely new. The movie is a refreshing change from the usual “professionally done” flicks.

Sudhish has finally realized his dream of making his own movie, and it has taken him seven years to come to this stage. This movie is all about chasing your dreams. Shot on a shoestring budget, the movie is moderately paced throughout, with a few comic scenes here and there, and no chance of you getting bored. This is a youth film, made by the young, for the young.

My verdict? Definitely a must see.

Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu

Sunday, September 3rd, 2006

Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu - the latest Kamalahassan flick to hit the silver screen. The movie starts of with the quote Another Episode in a Police Officer’s Life, leading us to believe that this is a sequel to Kaakha Kaakha.

I’ll give my verdict up front: Go to the theatre without any expectations, and be prepared for an immensely enjoyable movie. I should also mention that this movie is not for the faint of heart or even the mildly squeamish folks due to the fact that VV contains a lot of graphic scenes involving dismemberment, blood, rape, etc. Wonder how the Censor Board gave it only a U/A rating instead of an A. Anyway, my advice to viewers, don’t compare Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu with Kaakha Kaakha. They both stand out on their own as great movies. See them as individual movies, and enjoy them both…

Anyway, for those of you who want some detail on the movie, there’s more…

Reservation

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

I guess it’s high time I put forth my view on reservation. The point is that we had Dr. Raj Reddy, the founding Director of the Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, speaking at the inauguration of our new facility on this topic.

His major point was that the majority of students who get into professional courses are from the urban environment. Very few rural students have got into a good engineering college, due to lack of quality education. The Government should take steps to identify the talented individuals and equip them with the necessary skills to make them an all round person. Simply pulling a random guy and telling him - “Look, you have a seat in IIM-A thanks to reservation. Go there” is not going to be any use if the guy is not talented. The problem comes from the fact that there is not enough quality education in the rural areas, and even then, the talented individuals are often unable to afford it.

Went today for Fanaa. My review:

Fanaa = 3 minute synopsis + Kolangal Effect

Kolangal Effect

Saturday, May 27th, 2006

Meaning: The art of stretching a story so that it drags on for years…
Pronounciation: Obvious.
Usage: Fanaa is the application of the Kolangal Effect to a 3 minute synopsis.
Root: Kolangal is the leading (I think) megaserial in Tamil Nadu and the plot has been stretched for the past year, at the very least.
Note: Similiar expression - Stormtrooper Effect

49-O

Monday, May 8th, 2006

Just got back from the voting booth…

It’s disgusting… the way 49-O has been circulated around in the media, and still the polling officers are asking “What is 49-O?”.

Does your booth officer know about the 49-O clause? Has it been exercised?

For those of you who are not aware of it, 49-O is an option where you can say that you are not satisfied with any of the candidates and still exercise your right to vote.

Go ahead, have it your way

Best Movie Dialogues - 1

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

After the “resounding” success of the Best One Liners series, it’s time to make it as a best movie dialogue series…

Mijic

Tuesday, April 11th, 2006

I met up with my cousin sometime last week and he introduced me to some new music.

One was Richie Blackmore’s Temple of the King, a slow song on the lines of Hotel California that appeals to your heart. The song features a nice long guitar piece in the middle that I really like.

The second, it’s pretty funny, it’s fusion music at it’s best. Black Eyed Peas’ The Elephunk Theme. This song is a remix of Ilayaraja’s Unakkum Enakkum Aanandham from Sri Raghavendra. To tell the truth, I haven’t heard any of the songs from Sri Raghavendra, but when I heard The Elephunk Theme, the first thing that struck me was the Tamil lyrics in the background. However, this song has a nice beat to which you can tap your foot nicely. On surfing a bit, I stumbled upon this post. Check it out…

The Life And Times of Prathapa Mudaliar

Sunday, March 5th, 2006

This book - The Life and times of Prathapa Mudaliar - is the English translation of the first Tamil novel - Prathapa Mudaliar Charithram. I attended the Chennai book release yesterday (and incidentally met up with Ravi after a long time) at Book Point opposite Spencer’s Plaza.

The book was written by Vedanayakam Pillai back in 1857, but till now, no efforts were made to translate it. The translation was done by my aunt, Dr. Meenakshi Tyagarajan and the book was published by Katha. The book was formally released yesterday in Chennai by Shri Ashokamithran (the writer’s writer, as Lazygeek would call him).

The novel, in itself, is a very interesting tale. Pull out a copy, and sit down for an enjoyable evening.

Matrix Code Screensaver

Friday, March 3rd, 2006

As a big fan of the Matrix trilogy, what better way to entertain myself than write a Matrix Code screensaver for DOS. Yes, for DOS.

Nothing major, the trick is to directly write into the screen buffer. Clutzy, yes, but a good experience.
