Kartik was talking about traveling in the big bad city of Mumbai. His post prompted me to write a post about traveling in metropolitan cities in USA.

Basically, the public transportation infrastructure in most cities will make seasoned Chennai/Mumbai travelers cringe in horror. (Well, not really, but I’ve seen more frequent 29C buses in Chennai than a 500 bus out here in Pittsburgh). You really need to have a car to get anywhere important.

Having said that, I must still comment that Pittsburgh has one of the best bus networks across the US. Like the Mumbai trains, the buses here follow a rigid schedule (well, mostly). You can pick up a schedule free of cost from any bus, the University Center on the Carnegie Mellon campus also has a number of bus schedules of all buses that pass in the vicinity of the university. These schedules give daily timings, along with major stop points and a map of the route. You can also go online to the website of the Port Authority of Allegheny County and enter your starting location and destination intersections, and the website will automatically give you a few routes which you can follow, along with the timings.

New Vow Taken

One man is about to do the unthinkable…

Like Sudhish did quite some time back, I’m taking a new vow now.

No more Orkut.

Yes, that’s right. No more orkut for the next 45 days.

No responding to testimonials.

No responding to buddy requests.

No logging on to orkut.

Not even typing orkut.com in the browser address bar… (Actually, this alone will be the toughest part)

No viewing messages from orkut. (Move ‘em all straight to the orkut folder without even opening them) (No, this will be the toughest part)

Why, do you ask? One of my pet addictions is checking out who has recently (s)crapped in my (s)crapbook. I’ve become a bit too addicted to orkut, and so this vow. Let’s just see how much of orkut de-addiction a human being can take.

Update: (19th March 2006, 8 AM) Seems that I can’t take much of it. I broke the vow after just 48 hours. Repeattu… Baba counting starts…

Disposing of old computers

An old friend and I were chatting yesterday when he mentioned something that really shocked me. Apparently at his university, when they want to upgrade their PCs, they just throw, and I mean throw, the old PCs out on to the road. There they lie, broken and smashed, for the garbage man to collect.

Come on, at least place it properly or sell it. Just because the university is paying for the PCs doesn’t mean that you have to throw the old ones out. Selling them at about $100 or even less could give the university a lot of money, which would otherwise go wasted.

What’s your opinion on this?

I just completed an online transaction and paid through my credit card. Within 5 minutes, HSBC bank calls me up to confirm the order. Nice.

Now if only others provided that kind of service…
