A Cautionary Note

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

People are advised against eating meat for the next week or so. It seems that carcasses of animals that have died in Thursday’s rains are being used and sold in meat shops.

It always pays to be safe rather than sorry.

Chennai Rain

Thursday, October 27th, 2005

Need I say anything??? The met department says that Chennai has received 27 cm of rainfall in the last 24 hours and that it is likely to last for another 24 hours.

Stuck here at home, I’m feeling guilty that I’m not able to go to work and complete my tasks. But then again, when practically everybody is in the same situation, I guess there’s nothing more that I can do…

Onu sollaren, nallavanna aandavan sodhippaan, kai vuda maatan. Kettavannakku aandavan nariya kuduppaan. Kai vittiduvaan.

Easy enough this one. Guess the movie.

(Anybody who knows two bits about me would get this instantly)

Update: Another dialogue from the same movie…

Ithu onakkum enakkum mattum thaan sandai. Ithula nee saaghanum, illa naan saaghanum. Unnoda aalunga saaghanum, illa ennoda aalunga saaghanum. Pudhu makkal illa… appaavi makkal illa…

I think this one is a dead giveaway…

Update (6th November 2005): I think it’s time I gave the answer away…

New Brake Technology

Monday, October 10th, 2005

Seen today on Nelson Manickam Road, the driver and cleaner of one of Chennai’s innumerable thanni lorries were testing a new brake technology for their perpertually brakeless vehicle.

The new brake technology? The concrete median on the road. Numerous disadvantages observed were

  • the scattering of concrete chips all over the road for the braking distance
  • damage to the brake itself, making it good for only one use (parava illai. Chennai has innumerable other medians to use as brakes

One interesting aspect observed was that steel is stronger than concrete (or atleast lorry manufacturers do a better job on the wheel caps than Chennai Corporation on the medians)

Solar Eclipse

Monday, October 3rd, 2005

A solar eclipse can be a fascinating experience, unless you happen to be a Hindu, in which case, you

  • Need to stay indoors during the eclipse
  • Cannot eat or drink during the eclipse
  • Must have a head bath after the eclipse and before eating anything
  • Cannot go to the toilet during the eclipse
