Sunday, September 26th, 2004

I still have a couple of GMail invites left. If anybody still wants one, please leave your name and email in the comments box. I’d suggest you put your e-mail as <username> [at] <domain> . <tld> (note the spaces) to avoid them being picked up by spam-bots.

Shrek 2

Saturday, September 25th, 2004

I saw Shrek 2 today morning. They have taken elements from several fairy tales and even some hit movies and spun them together in a beautiful fashion, in the end, making it one of the most hilarious movies of all time. This movie is a must have for any animation fan.

Network Failure

Wednesday, September 15th, 2004

It looks like the AirTel network has suffered a complete failure. My mobile displays “Limited Service” and if I try to dial any number it says “Emergency Calls Only”. It seems to have been like that for the past hour at least.

I also tried changing the network manually. There were only three entries for BSNL Mobile, INA 84 (Hutch) and RPG. INA AirTel was not even in the list. That’s when I realized that there was a complete network failure. I guess only time will tell how long the network will be down.

After a lot of advertisement hoardings in the city proclaiming - “Connection problems? Switch to AirTel!”, they are going to have a lot of angry subscribers on its hands after this incident.

Vetti @ Work

The series of presentation that we are supposed to give are all over.
Now, I’m sitting in the office doing practically nothing. I guess I
might as well try to code something in Visual C++ to kill time instead
of playing Solitaire and listening to Aayitha Ezhuthu…

Interesting… Anti-Spam?

I received a mail that went like this:

Subject: **PLEASE HELP ME STOP SPAM AT YAHOO**

Hello,

My name is Tal Johnson. I have been against useless
spam email for quite sometime now. Recently my yahoo
account has been filled with numerous loads of
spam. In fact that is how I got your email
addresses, through the Carbon Copy (CC) header
that was sent to you of spam sent to me.

I am writing a petion to send to yahoo to invest more
man power into stopping this sick mail that I and you
have been getting. Aol and Hotmail have brought legal
suites against spammers. Lets work to get yahoo to do
the same.

Im asking you to support my cause if you are like me
and are sick and tired of getting junk email in our
boxes!

Please reply to me if you are interested in signing
my petion to yahoo to stop spam. Right now, I don’t
have much people, but hoping that you will help
my cause, if I get enough people I will start
writing out a petion that I will either send you
in the mail to sign, or online. Just reply and
I will keep you in the loop and send more information.

Let stop spam. You can forward this to any other
yahoo friends that you know that may be interested in
supporting my cause.

Thanks for your help in advance,
Tal Johnson

I was pretty intruiged until I went to his profile page on Yahoo. There it said Last Updated: 08/09/2004. And the page was empty. I thought as much. A novel way for people to identify themselves to yet another spammer…

Work? No Work…

Wednesday, September 8th, 2004

We’ve been allotted cubicles in the office (at last). Only problem is that we are all spread out over two floors. I’m in the last row in the very corner and very close to the project managers. Gotta be careful there, can’t be goofing off…

The session on IEEE 1394 went off well. The rest of the guys are taking sessions which will go on until Monday. After that, we’ll probably be assigned projects, though I heard through unofficial channels that we have already been assigned to different projects and so my guess is that we’ll start in the project directly on Tuesday.

Predators

Regarding Pleo’s post on credit cards, I’ve also had several interesting incidents happen to me. It all started when the ICICI guy came to my training center and gave us the forms. Well, all of us filled up the forms and returned it to him. As for me, I decided to opt out of the Auto-Debit facility. So far so good. A couple of days later, I was hounded at the ICICI ATM by a salesman.

Salesman: “Sir, we are offering credit cards sir.”

Me: “Thank you, I already have applied for a credit card with your bank through my company.”

Him: “Sir, which company sir?”

Me: “HCL Technologies.”

Him: “Sir, they are giving only one year free sir, we are giving three years free sir.”

Me: “Yowe!!! They are already giving me a lifetime free card and you are troubling me with this. Get lost!!!”

Two weeks later, I got a letter from ICICI stating that “In order to process your application on priority, we require an auto-debit mandate from you…”. I was thinking, why the F*** are they asking me for an auto debit mandate even though I don’t want it??? So I called them up, surprise surprise, on a Sunday afternoon. They were working!!!!

Me: “I have received this mail from you asking me for the auto-debit mandate. Is it absolutely necessary???”

Her: “Sir, if you have an ICICI account, it is mandatory that you have auto-debit on your credit card sir.”

Me: “OK, please cancel my credit card application!”

Her: “Sir…”

Me: “Just do it.” and slammed the phone down.

Sometime later, when I went to the ICICI ATM, the same salesman approached me.

Him: “Sir, we are offering free credit cards sir.”

Me: “Yeah right, with you people demanding auto-debit, I don’t want a credit card.”

Him: “Sir, but that is optiona…”

Me: “$(#@(*&!@($. They told me it is mandatory. I don’t want a card with your stupid bank. Just leave me alone!!!”

So far I haven’t seen hide nor hair of him.

In a related incident, my grandmother got a call from HDFC offering her a credit card, and a childrens policy!!!!
