Dream Come True

Monday, July 19th, 2004

There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed his desire to become one of the world’s great writers. When asked to define “great” he said, “I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level, stuff that will make them scream, cry, howl in pain and anger!”

He now works for Microsoft, writing error messages.

Chennai Buses

Thursday, July 15th, 2004

Daniel Russell wrote this article in today’s Hindu. He certainly knew what he was talking about. Everyday, starting at 7 in the morning, the buses are packed like sardines in a can. You don’t usually get a seat unless you get on at the terminus. The buses are like this throughout the day, and the load lessens after around 9 in the night and sometimes during the afternoon. The bus which I usually take - 29C - is jam-packed at all times, forcing me to wait for the next bus, which is, more often than not, even more crowded!

It’s a very rare occasion that you see a bus in the middle of it’s journey that’s not crowded. The only bus I’ve seen that’s not usually crowded is 23A. The only thing is that it fills up after I board the bus and get a seat. :D

Smart Dog

Monday, July 12th, 2004

A wealthy man decided to go on a safari in Africa. He took his faithful pet dog along for company. One day the dog starts chasing butterflies and before long he discovers that he is lost. So, wandering about he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the obvious intention of having lunch.

The dog thinks, “Boy, I`m in deep trouble now.” Then he noticed some bones on the ground close by, and immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat.

Just as the leopard is about to leap, the dog exclaims loudly, “Man, that was one delicious leopard. I wonder if there are any more around here?” Hearing this the leopard halts his attack in mid stride, as a look of terror comes over him, and slinks away into the trees.

“Whew”, says the leopard. “That was close. That dog nearly had me.”

Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So, off he goes.

But the dog saw him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figured that something must be up. The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard.

The cat is furious at being made a fool of and says, “Here monkey, hop on my back and see what`s going to happen to that conniving canine.”

Now the dog sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back, and thinks,” What am I going to do now?” But instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers pretending he hasn`t seen them yet. And just when they get close enough to hear, the dog says, “Where`s that monkey. I just can never trust him. I sent him off half an hour ago to bring me another leopard, and he`s still not back!!”

Hearing this the Leopard darts off to safety.

Moral Of the Story:

1) Never panic in times of stress - Never take stress, its better to give it rather than take it

2) Innovation is key to survival, so keep innovating new things or die.

Cell Virus?

Sunday, July 11th, 2004

I got a message on my mobile today from some CellOne user. I couldn’t view the full number but I did see the first 7 digits - 9444055***. Now when I tried to view the message, the screen showed Opening Message, and then just hung. Then it restarted. Could this be the advent of a new cell virus?

Job

Friday, July 9th, 2004

I’ve just finished my first week of training at HCL Technologies. I joined the company on Monday at their Vadapalani office and was moved to Nungambakkam for training. We’ve filled up our joining forms and handed them over to the HR people and should get our ID cards sometime next week hopefully.

This week was fully on HCLT Processes & Functions. The sessions could be said as nothing but dull, with some exceptions. Monday, it was just a simple jolly ice-breaker with us getting to know our colleagues. Tuesday, we had some info on HR and finance before settling down into a rather dull study of Quality procedures at HCLT. That went on till yesterday evening. Today, we had a Marketing, Training, InfoSec & Admin overview, all of which were quite interesting, with perhaps the exception of Marketing & Sales. But then again, anything’s better than 2 and a half days of Quality.

Next week, one batch (including me) is going over to Haddows Road to continue our training there. Hopefully we’ll have exposure to computers there. Even if there isn’t it shouldn’t really be a problem as it’s mostly Technical training.

Sunday, July 4th, 2004

I’ve just finished downloading and installing Windows XP SP2 build 2149. So far I haven’t noticed any incompatibilities. I’m just hoping that none show up.
