The new design template is ready and I’m testing out the style switcher script now. It was working fine yesterday morning, but suddenly, last night it stopped working. I have to check that out now.

I gave my passport application form two days back. The system says it’s under process. I’ve also managed to get PHP installed on my system. So, now, I’m toying with PHP. Unfortunately, the MySQL download is about 20 MB so I’ll have to wait for Sunday to download that. I’ve made a few scripts and am now testing the functionality before I jump into the design.
I’m back from Bangalore and back to work. I’ve started learning PHP and am looking at several different websites for code snippets to use on my own website. For about Rs. 1200 a year, I can have my own website with 10 MB of space, 1 GB of bandwidth per month, the works. I’m now contemplating upgrading my own site and purchasing a domain, but perhaps this site is hardly worth the effort. Well, maybe it’s worth it for the ad-free space. Mental note: ask Kribs who his provider is. But it’s definitely worth having all those features for my family website, ad-free space especially!
It’s not that easy learning PHP as I’m unable to find any really good tutorials on the net, unlike ASP, XML, and all those. I’ve installed Apache on my comp, but I’m unable to get PHP working. I guess I have to stick with Tripod UK for that. The only disadvantage is the mile long URL (http://members.lycos.co.uk/…).
Vishnu & I tried a GRE practice test together. We weren’t really interested in the test and skipped the analytical writing section and part of the verbal section. But we attempted the entire quantitative section. We were quite surprised at the end, when we got 320 verbal and 800 in quans. I never thought all our quans answers were right. Guess you can never tell.
I’m now in Bangalore for a short vacation. We had a nice long drive over from Chennai. Now, just to enjoy the next few days. But when I get back, I’ll get back to work on my family website. The weather is nice here, quite cool now. But it may get hotter during the day. Let’s see…
Finally, all the painting work is done and my room is ready. It’s amazing how much stuff you collect over the years, and look at it now and think of it as junk. And how much stuff you find after it being “lost” for so long. I’ve just partially rearranged my stuff after it being out in the open for about a week, and the house is partially back in order.
My family website is coming along well, and I have almost completed the design. All that it needs now is an approval. Let’s see…
Rather interesting dig at REC Trichy.
Designing a nice website with websafe colors and standards compliance is an absolute killer. All the same, I want a nice flashy interface with a simple navigation structure. Thankfully Tripod supports SSI, or I’d be done for. I’m redesigning my family website with HTML 4.0 & CSS, using no frames and absolutely no tables for layout! I’ve got the basic layout ready, but I still have to get the different stylesheets completed. I’ve got three basic color schemes done, with one monochrome scheme done. Yet to do the print.css file. Of course, these schemes are only temporary and will probably be scrapped if not approved. But I hope that at least one of them is accepted. I’ve also got a nice styleswitcher script that can change the stylesheet at runtime in all browsers (not only Mozilla) so all my viewers can choose the style they like best.
Blogger’s Dano project sounds rather interesting. However, I think I’ll wait for them to finish all their beta tests and move me over.
Finally, all my papers are done and I’m on a month’s vacation. Hopefully, I’ll get back to daily blogging, if I’m not playing FreeSpace, that is ;-). I’ve begun work on restoring my family website which fell into utter disrepair a few months ago. I had no choice but to take it offline till I had time to work on it. Now I have that time. I’ve also downloaded SETI @ Home, a software program that utilizes the spare CPU cycles on your system to search for extraterrestrial life. It’s rather interesting when you learn you are not alone in the universe. Reminds me of the year 2367 (play FreeSpace to learn why)!!!
